56/ overheard

When I saw this wall in Ayuthaya (before adding the gold)
there was just the speech bubble,
a piece of plaster in the midst of a large old brick wall;
am in two minds whether to keep the
change, it was already so eloquent.

55/ mirror image

Today is another birthday, it was my twin's yesterday,
she is far away, so it's strange to know that the idea of time
being different in another country
means that we can celebrate on the same day..
never could get my head around numbers.

It's a mystery how any thing works..

8/10/11

54/ past patterns

Did this a few weeks ago, in the middle of some
old pattern showing up; it somehow helped enormously
~ digital sand play.
It resolved, or became conscious, & passed out of memory

The background photo at right is of mirror tiles in a Thai temple,
a feature in many wats.

6/22/11

53/ lotus

It's a little like when I was painting every day,
I would put one aside for a time, begin another, look at all
new ones together, etc.
The lotus is my favourite flower.
Nothing really prepares you for the first sight of one,
really quite breathtaking.
..every time..

I find this funny & clever

52/ vanishing

This one began with a buddha figure vanishing into the
dappled light; later I added very pale flowers
from an earlier image, finally adding a coloured one
around the heart area, which also seems to be the eyes' focus.
The speed of a computer is so helpful
to just seeing what happens by itself.

6/20/11

51/ meditate

There's a possible new project: an image suitable to
represent meditation, for a book.
 For me that means
'allowing every thing to be as it is.'

So it could be a buddha type figure
(that seems to be an easily understood symbol),
or almost anything that evokes a sense of peace..
Even though it might for instance be an active
process of sending love to all be-ings.
In the case of a book cover, it also needs to be
an image that captures the attention.

6/18/11

50/ light

A beautiful light at the beach today, the air clean & crisp

You might be astonished to know how many photos
I have of light on water, it's one of my favourite sights.
Light on any thing. Some days especially,
light seems to caress whatever is.

6/16/11

49/ flowers

Sometimes I like to see how close I can go to "too much",
while trying to suggest a state that's beyond quantifying..

6/14/11

48/ skylights

Another short video I made from a few stills,
I might try to recreate it
as an 'event' on my mac.

6/11/11

47/ earth touching

More muted, perhaps due to trouble
with my back (taking some anti-inflammatory pills)
The hand is in the earth touching mudra on a Thai statue.
I've done a few versions of both, then I'll keep the best.

6/10/11

46/ responding

Something I'm interested in showing is how the layers
of time/history appear ~ or disappear ~ at old sites
particularly when it's been a place of devotion
for generations ~ it seems to be what draws people,
as much as anything; we sense that devotion even if
not consciously aware of it.
Certainly I do, don't you?

6/8/11

45/ dust to gold

Found a quote I'd saved:
Those who turn dust to gold by their
gaze, could they also glance at me
from the corner of their eyes?

Hafiz, I think
it was in my mind while I made this new one

6/5/11

44/ all my books

Realised I'd not posted all 5 of my books in one place:
Images from the I Ching was the first, with 64 paintings
of the hexagrams, I also wrote the words, there's a foreword
by Ralph Metzner, it was published by Craftsman House.

The next 3 were in collaboration with Bryce Courtenay,
he's a dear friend & a very well known author here.
The first edition of A Recipe for Dreaming had my paintings,

As did The Family Frying Pan ~ plus drawings,

while the 2nd edition of A Recipe for Dreaming has my
altered photos. It was published by Penguin, & is still
available; all can be found at used book sellers
in Australia, I expect.

& the latest one Burning Questions I did with Isaac Shapiro,
it has mostly my paintings (as above), also some photos.
You can see more pages & purchase here, or on Isaac's website.

5/31/11

42/ appear-ing

It's a bit of a mystery, how much to say about what
motivates these images. In fact they just happen; initially
the thought was about how things appear to emerge,
all overlaid with travels in asia where time seems to
emerge in amazing layers.

Is it possible to suggest the
Unchanging in an unchanging form?

5/30/11

41/ standing

Sometimes the day seems to influence the light
in what I'm working on, but for this it was sunny when I began,
& grey as I finished; also the light in Laos is different,
that's where these elegant statues are.
Also the screen is different again, super bright.

5/26/11

40/ leafing

leaf-ing meditation

& another .. gold leafing.

5/21/11

37/ still appearing

Doing this the day before 21st: Judgement Day.
did it happen, were you saved, who judged??

5/20/11

36/ meditations

Yesterday Gerhard taught me some new tricks,
I finished off some pictures with them, such fun.

have been doing something similar by hand, more or less,
but these tools suggest new approaches too

the main problem is to not be in front of the screen
all day & night.
however tomorrow is the predicted day of judgement..
damn, I guess that means no power..
weird, really, that one group expects to be 'saved'
for the beliefs they have learnt.

5/18/11

33/ beach

I thought I'd only put my digital art here,
but why not photos, too, since most are made up of photos.

these date from before my digital cameras,
there is a difference I think

one thing is that I went to the beach almost every day,
then, so caught many moods

Also there is a difference when the aim is to get reference
for paintings, rather than as an end result.

5/17/11

32/ buddha

Read on at least one site that today is
the Buddha Jayanti.
That is the celebration of his birth, enlightenment &
nirvana. A kind of strange one, when to be
'enlightened' is meant to be beyond birth, death
& all dualities.
A nice thing to celebrate, nonetheless.

5/7/11

30/ vision

This is the first one I've completed on the Mac, though
the separate photographs date from different trips to Thailand.
Had my eyes tested yesterday, pleased to discover
there is not much change.

5/6/11

29/ exercising

It's really giving my internal memory banks
a workover, to be moving frequently between
the pc & mac, today I lost the one above
through carelessness, had to finish it again.

& this was more complicated than it looks, as the bricks in
the wall are in perspective ~ when I matched those behind
the buddha in another photo, he became elongated.
Will look at it again in a few days, not sure it's finished.

5/4/11

28/ spangled drongo

This came about because I'd fluked a nightlights shot that
resembles notes of music. Put a few different ones
together for the background, with two shots of the same
buddha.

5/2/11

27/ faded glory

To me, this is like memory: some details hardly there,
other parts in the foreground for no special reason,
the whole looking like a random cross-reference ~
although this is carefully thought through.. as much as
one can say that.. the synapses spark along that
particular route for who knows why, then some other
part of the brain makes up a story. Isn't it so?

4/27/11

26/ first from iMac

Although I made these 3 on my old pc,
this is the first time I've posted from the iMac

it's all slower in that I'm getting to know it/am a slow learner
& a little nervous to do the wrong thing

that's why I've made another version of the flaming swords
(protection !).
Red paintings: Sea Hyun Lee

4/23/11

25/ for the Mac

Decided I wanted a very light image for the new desktop,
(though I put it together on my old pc, didn't feel like
fiddling with too many unknowns at one time)
But then I went through some folders, & decided on

this one, instead.
It's so great to see them big on the screen.
Heard a little of Alim Qasimov the other night,
my favourite singer,
it wont be 'live' for long though.

4/20/11

24/ this is fun

This is fun, when images keep appearing!

Am still naming them projections but it's just a file name,
they don't really need titles.
These four are checking out the Istanbul site that I recognised
in some pre verbal way.

& can hardly wait to see how they look on my new 27 inch
iMac. My first. Waiting for a friend to show me stuff on it.

4/16/11

23/ beach break

Went to see my sister for a few days, including a sunset
at Fingal headland, a spectacular spot with rocks made up of
octagonal pillars which the waves beat against with
awesome force & ever changing patterns.
Accidental mysteries, a blog I liked,
has moved to designobserver, ditto.

4/10/11

22/ stilled

Although these seem to be a continuation of the
projections/appearing images, have named them differently..

partly so I didn't have to re-name earlier ones

am slowed by not having my usual browsing program:
I've close to 400GB of files, a lot to look through
for a particular photo

sometimes I simply see what the mouse will click on

or recall, for instance, the tiny temple in northern Thailand
for the background above

or find a list of possibilities I made some weeks ago..
another way of saying it just happens, really.

theyshootpictures
has great lists of movies/directors etc
